Record Numbers On Zero Hours Contracts

New research conducted by the think tank, the Work Foundation, at the Lancaster University has found that the number of those on zero hours contracts increased by 136,000 in 2023, compared to 2022, with the total number on such contracts reaching a record 1.1 million (3.4% of the total workforce). Of that number, 73.5% "are in severely insecure work, meaning they must contend with multiple forms of insecurity such as contractual insecurity, low wages, unpredictable pay, and lack of access to rights and protections." Moreover, of the 136,000 increase during 2023, 88,000 (65%) were given to those aged 16-24 years of age.
