As businesses are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to streamline their operations, one tool that has witnessed a surge in terms of use in the workplace during the first quarter of 2023 is ChatGPT.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT is an advanced chatbot solution launched in November 2022 by OpenAI, that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) technology for natural language processing. The ChatGPT software can understand and respond to human messages, providing an automated response in real-time. ChatGPT can also be integrated into different communication channels such as text messaging, email, and social media, thereby making it an extremely attractive tool for businesses with a strong online presence and customer base.
ChatGPT provides several potential benefits for businesses, including increased customer engagement, improved customer service, and reduced workload for staff. With the ChatGPT software's ability to handle routine, repetitive tasks, this provides employees with more time to focus on complex issues that require human attention. That is, the software allows businesses to automate their customer support, sales, and marketing tasks, thereby reducing the need for multiple staff members to perform those roles.
Moreover, ChatGPT can be quickly and easily integrated with existing business systems, including customer relationship management (CRM) tools, thereby allowing businesses to manage customer interactions more effectively.
As we highlighted in a recent article, AI technology such as ChatGPT, could pave the way towards a four-day working week becoming the norm.
In the first quarter of 2023, the use of ChatGPT in the workplace surged. Indeed, research recently published by DeskTime revealed that the use of ChatGPT by businesses worldwide doubled between January - February 2023, and then doubled again between February and March 2023. By April 2023, moreover, it had become the 79th most used app in the workplace
Commenting upon the findings, the CEO of DeskTime, Artis Rozentals, stated: "We're seeing a systematic integration of the technology into businesses....I don't think this is anything to be afraid of – the diverse applications can only improve the productivity of businesses, and those that can implement it successfully will have the upper hand."
Worries About Job Losses
Nevertheless, as the use of AI technology such as ChatGPT increases within the workplace, many worry about the detrimental impact this could have in terms of job losses. Indeed, a recent Goldman Sachs report published on the 26th March 2023, projects that “generative AI could expose the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs to automation.“
However, the Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, is less pessimistic. He told a Wall Street Journal panel that the capacity of AI to enhance human abilities will fuel innovation, without necessarily replacing workers, as the productivity gains have the potential to transform society. One way in which it could be transformative in this way, according to Sir Christopher Pissarides, is by faciliting a move towards a four-day working week, thereby making it the norm
Does AI Pose An Existential Threat To Humanity?
In recent months, some have warned that AI, if left unchecked and unregulated, could pose an existential threat to humanity, warning that it has the potential to surpass human intelligence, become autonomous and uncontrollable, and lead to catastrophic consequences. Moreover, they argue, an AI system could be programmed with malicious intent or be optimized for a goal without consideration of the potential negative outcomes that could result.

A statement published on the Centre for AI Safety website by 350 leading researches and others who work in AI, for example, has called for world leaders to take this existential risk seriously, and to regulate the development of AI. The statement reads: "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war."
Moreover, the director of the Center for AI Safety, Dan Hendrycks, told CBS that there are: "numerous pathways to societal-scale risks from AI...For example, AIs could be used by malicious actors...[who] could intentionally release rogue AI that actively attempt to harm humanity. If such an AI was intelligent or capable enough, it may pose significant risk to society as a whole...[Also, where humanity delegates control of the economy to AI], this increasing dependence could make the idea of simply 'shutting them down' not just disruptive, but potentially impossible, leading to a risk of humanity losing control over our own future."

Hendrycks also warns of the risks of AI developing autonomously, in that "it would be difficult to tell if an AI had a goal different from our own because it could potentially conceal it. This is not completely out of the question."
However, others within the AI field believe that the potential risks relating to AI are overstated. For instance, the Chief AI Architect at UST, Adnan Masood, argues that: "While it's tempting to speculate about superhuman AI or rogue machines bringing about an apocalypse, the reality is that we're nowhere near that level of sophistication yet. AI, as we know it today, doesn't pose an existential risk. We have yet to create anything approaching the sentience of even a dog, let alone human-level intelligence....[Whilst risks like algorithmic bias are] important, [they] are not existential. They are risks that we can manage...they are part of the ongoing process of integrating any new technology into our societal structures."
