Historically, changes to the National Minimum Wage have been applied in October of each year. However, from April 2017 this will change to April of each year to bring it in line with changes to the National Living Wage. Hence, from 2017 onwards, the rate changes will be applied to both simultaneously every April.
From the 1st April 2017, the rates for the National Minimum Wage will go up as follows:-
- For workers aged 21-24 inclusive, the rate will increase from £6.95 to £7.05 per hour
- For workers aged 18-20 inclusive, the rate will increase from £5.55 to £5.60 per hour
- For workers aged 16-17 inclusive, the rate will increase from £4.00 to £4.05 per hour
- The apprentice rate will increase from £3.40 to £3.50 per hour.
The rate of the National Living Wage for those aged 25 and over will increase from £7.20 to 7.50 per hour.
