Increase In Defence Spending To Be Funded By Axing 70,000 Civil Servants Jobs

The Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, recently announced that defence spending would be increased to 2.5% of GDP by 2030. To avoid adding to the national debt, however, the increase will be partially funded by axing the jobs of 70,000 civil servants. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, stated: "This is a choice but the choice we are making is to invest in European security and defence. And if we stop Putin doing what he is trying to do in Ukraine, in the end, it will cost all of us a great deal less. I think it is reasonable to reduce the civil service to the size it was pre-Covid, and I'm confident we can do that with more efficient delivery of public services."
