AI: British Workers Bridge Training Void with Self-Directed Learning
In a significant shift towards technological adaptation, new research from the Bosch Tech Compass 2025 Report reveals that over half of the British public are taking the initiative to educate themselves about artificial intelligence (AI). This proactive approach comes as AI is increasingly recognised as the dominant technology that will shape the next decade.
Growing Recognition of AI's Importance
The study highlights a remarkable transformation in public perception, with 66% of respondents identifying artificial intelligence as the most influential technology for the coming decade. This growing acceptance reflects a broader understanding of AI's potential to revolutionise various aspects of daily life and professional environments.
Perhaps most telling is the stark contrast between workplace preparation and individual initiative. Whilst 61% of the British public report never having received any artificial intelligence training in their workplace, 52% are planning to take matters into their own hands through self-directed learning. This disconnect between institutional support and personal motivation underscores the urgency many feel to prepare for an AI-driven future.

Shifting Attitudes and Expectations
The research indicates an increasingly positive outlook toward technological progress, with 69% of respondents believing that technological advancement makes the world better. This optimism extends to specific applications of artificial intelligence, with over half of those surveyed supporting its deployment in robotics (51%), and 47% hoping for a positive impact in relation to healthcare.
Educational Implications and Workplace Readiness
The findings reveal critical insights about educational needs in the AI era. British workers are particularly focused on developing specific skills, with 50% identifying critical thinking as the most crucial capability in an artificial intelligence driven world. Close behind, 49% prioritise the effective utilisation of AI tools.

Looking Ahead
The survey results paint a picture of a nation actively preparing for technological transformation. Whilst institutional support may be lagging, the British public are showing remarkable initiative in preparing for an artificial intelligence dominated future. This proactive approach suggests a population that understands the importance of adapting to technological change and who are willing to invest in their own development to remain competitive in an evolving workplace landscape.
As AI continues to reshape various sectors, the self-directed learning trend among the British public may well serve as a model for how the nation can prepare itself for technological transformation, even in the absence of formal institutional support.

Commenting upon the findings, the Managing Director of Bosch UK, Steffen Hoffmann, stated: "AI has the power to dramatically change our everyday lives. We often see negative reactions from society towards new technologies but the results of this year’s Tech Compass survey show that British people are increasingly embracing this technology and recognising its potential and, most importantly, its benefits."
Employee Benefits: The Heat Scheme
New Scheme
Further to our recent articles on employee benefits (article 1; article 2), the Heat Scheme was recently launched under which employees can obtain a free consultation on enhancing the heating efficiency of their home, plus an interest-free loan (of between £2,000.00 - £5,000.00) and/or grants towards the upfront cost of switching to clean energy, such as green retrofits and heat pumps. The employee pays back the loan in monthly instalments from their salary, on a salary sacrifice basis. In that regard, the scheme works in a similar way to the Cycle to Work scheme
Sign-Ups
Employers that have already added the Heat Scheme as an employee benefit, include Royal London, JCDecaux, NHS Professionals, Clear Bank, UK Power Networks, and the British Film Institute. Around 250,000 employees now have access to the Heat Scheme as an employee benefit

Tax Benefits
As with other salary sacrifice schemes / employee benefits schemes, one of the key benefits for employees is tax efficiency. It allows the employee to exchange a portion of their salary for the benefits of the Heat Scheme. The sacrificed portion is deducted from their gross salary before tax is calculated. As a result, the employee pays less income tax and National Insurance Contributions (NICs).
For employers, the scheme offers reduced National Insurance contributions
